In the 1775 and 1798 censuses, he was listed as Philip(p) Leonhard(t). In the 1834 census, he is listed as Johann Philipp Leonhardt.
Johann Philipp Leonhardt was born 18 December 1764 in Sprendlingen, Frankfurt am Main, Hessen, Germany, to parents Johann Conrad Leonhard and Rachel (Arnould) Leonhard. He was just an infant when he immigrated to Russia with his family, not yet two years old when they arrived in Oranienbaum. Life in Grimm would have been the only life he knew.
His father Conrad was a Lutheran stocking maker from Isenberg. The family traveled from German to Russia under document number 5029.
