Biography
Elizabeth "Betsey" Lester was a daughter of Elizabeth (Freeman; 1764-1843) and Elisha Lester (1739-abt.1826) of Preston, Connecticut. Her birth date probably was 27 June 1791 [1]. In this transcribed record, her parents are named as Elisha & Bitsey.
Betsey Lester married 10 May 1812 at Voluntown, Connecticut, Asa Fish, officiated by Peleg Randall, Elder [2].
Per their online memorial sites, there was at least one child of this union:
Betsey (Lester) Fish died 21 March 1836, with interment in Pachaug Cemetery, Griswold, listed on page 38 of the cemetery records. This entry unambiguously identifies her as "Fish, Betsey, wife of Asa, died Mar. 21, 1836, age 44" [4],[5]. Her grave marker is inscribed, also clearly and unambiguously [6]:
IN MEMORY BETSEY, Wife of ASA FISH, WHO DIED March 21, 1836, AE 44
Notes
Notably, the header panel of the online memorial site for the subject of this profile has incorrectly posted her death year as 1826, whereas the grave marker is very clearly inscribed 1836. The F-A-G posting requires revision.
A different F-A-G memorial site represents a different Betsey Lester who died "Nov. 10, 1840, Aet. 49" [7]. The depicted grave marker is inscribed Miss, thus she was unmarried. This grave is also in Pachaug Cemetery, listed on page 49 of the cemetery records [8]. This listing pertains to a different Betsey Lester, for whom death notices were published at several Connecticut locations in November 1940 (4 years later than the death of the subject of this profile) [9],[10],[11],[12],[13].
