Josiah was born in Guilford, on the Long Island Sound shore of Connecticut, to Edward and Rebekah (Lothrop) Lewis, on 27 Dec 1733.[1]
When he was 13, he moved with his parents northwest to Litchfield, in the foothills of the Berkshires.
There, he joined the militia and was fighting in it by age 22. Josiah served in both the French & Indian Wars and in the Revolution.
In about 1771 he removed to Poultney, then still part of the New York colony but differently minded and soon to separate and become Vermont,
In 1775 he was one of the 83 Green Mountain Boys with whom Ethan Allen astonishingly captured Fort Ticonderoga in 1775. In 1777, he was involved in the battle of Hubbarton, along with his son John, resisting the advances of General Burgoyne's forces. He also served as an aide to Col. Brookins, Vermont troops. [2][3]
After things settled down once Burgoyne was defeated, Josiah and Molly returned to Poultney and started farming the 160 acres she was awarded for her service. The Lewis family remained in possession of that farm into the 21st century.
Birth: Wilma J. Standifer Moore, compiler, The Barbour Collection of Connecticut Town Vital Records (Genealogical Publishing Co. Inc), 217, Guilford. Josiah is listed as b. (born), s. of Edward & Rebekah
