I'll definitely put you in touch with the lady from Canada. Later today I'll try to get ahold of her. She is descended from Alfred Lewis through his daughter Celeste. Her grandfather (Alvie Burden) just had his 101st birthday. He is one of the last surviving Canadian veterans of WWIi.

George Lewis was born in Monmouth, Root Township, Adams Co., Indiana - not Ohio. If you go to "Adams Co., Indiana GenWeb" and scroll down to the Court House records, you will see a listing for Estate Records. There you will find William Lewis' Estate records that lists, among many other things, the children who were all minors at the time of his death - early 1844. Alfred, George & Daniel D. H. (also called David at times) are listed. Also the 1850 Census of Darke Co., Ohio lists the family - Emeline Lewis and her children, including Alfred, George & Daniel.

A-ha! thank you so very much for the source, and clarifying the David/Daniel thing. This is a huge help.

The William Lewis family about land in Root Two., Adams Co., In in 1837, shortly after Adams Co broke off from Allen Co. Part of the land they bought now belongs to me. I've always been fascinated by the Lewis family and about a year ago I decided to see if I could find out what became of the family after they left Adams Co. I ended up meeting a lady from Canada who is a direct descendant of William Lewis through his son Alfred who was in Co. K, of the 54th. I've been spending a lot of time researching this family! Helps me cope with the cold gray win to er days! 😊

I'm so glad you started researching. If you're comfortable putting the Canadian descendant in contact with me, I help organize an occasional Zoom gathering of 54th descendants. I have a whole bunch of updates to make to a lot of profiles with your information. Once I get back into a "good" (to me) state, I'd love to have you review everything and see what I might still be missing. Research is one of my favourite ways to battle cold, grey days too.

Possible brother of Corporal Alfred Lewis? (He had a brother named George born about 1840 in Indiana; mother's name was Emeline.) Not enough information either way yet.
