First and last names were not entirely clear in the Lewis Family. Many were called by their second name or a nickname. For example Millard Lawson was seldom called by either name. As a young boy he was called "Bub". Later He decided that "ML" or Mel was better. When he joined the Navy, "Mel" was not accepted and he returned to "Millard Lawson" to comply with the rules. All the while he was called "Mel" by family and friends.
