Biography

Beryl was born in 1894.[1] She was the daughter of George Lewis and Martha Bulmer. She passed away in 1938.[2] She is buried in the Dawson River Cemetery, New South Wales.

Beryl never married. Her life story is recorded in the detailed obituary penned on her death.

MISS BERYL EUNICE LEWIS.
A very sad death occurred at the home of her mother, Mrs. M. P. Lewis, of Manning Street, Taree, on December 23, of Miss Beryl Eunice Lewis, at the age of 44 years. She was a daughter of the late Mr. George Lewis, and of Mrs. Lewis, of Manning Street, where she had lived during the whole of her life. For many years she was engaged in shops about the same spot as that in which she worked until sickness overtook her, for Messrs. Collins, Sherlaw, Costelloe, A. Scott and C. H. Peel. In the last-named establishment she was loved by the whole of the staff and enjoyed the fullest confidence of Mr. Peel, who considered her one of his right-hand staff members. Out side the shop she enjoyed similar love and regard, and was held in the highest esteem by the very many with whom she came in contact.
Her passing , was, unfortunately, anticipated for the last three months. She first became ill about 18 months ago and in the meantime underwent two operations. In between times she was able to resume her position in charge of one of the departments of Mr. Peel, but in May last she had again to enter hospital and it was then feared that nothing that medical or surgical skill could do would have the desired effect of restoring her to good health. Two months ago she was taken home from hospital and during that period she was tenderly cared for by her mother and sister.
Throughout her long illness she was buoyed up by her cheerful disposition, which she maintained till the end came as stated. She bad been connected with Mr. Peel's shop from the time he started in business on his own account. In addition to her sorrowing mother, the deceased is survived by the following brothers and sisters: Mr. Cyril Lewis (Port Macquarie), Mr. Elvert Lewis (Coff's Harbour), Mrs. D. S. Hopper (Hannam Vale), Mrs. A. Smith (Queensland), Mrs. H. H. Evans (Kyogle), Mra. F. C. Huckle (Forbes district), Mrs. L. Pereira (Albert-st, Taree. and Miss Elma Delecia Lewis (at home).
The funeral took place on December 24, after a service at the Taree Methodist Church, and then the cortege moved to the Dawson cemetery, where the interment took place. Rev. E. W. Hyde, who had been a constant attendant during deceased's illness, officiated (at both church and graveside). There were numerous wreaths, which Included ones from Peel's Staff, Walter Clunne, Alex Chapman, Girls' Comrades, Order of Knights, Ladles' Church Aid and others. The Methodist Girls' Comrades formed a guard of honor at the church. Of this body the deceased was Recorder for a number of years and later Vice-Director until the time of her death. She was also, while in health, a valued member of the Methodist Church Choir. Mr, W. T. Howard was the undertaker.[3]
