Note: Because of a great deal of similar names, as well as multiple intermarriages in the Libby family tree, Charles Libby, author of The Libby Family in America devised a numbering system from the Immigrant. The immigrant on WikiTree is John Libby. Each child is numbered in order, so John Libby is Child 1 (or Libby 1). Each of his children is numbered in order (1-1, 1-2, 1-3) etc. and each of their children takes the digits of the parent and adds their birth order number. Capt. John Libby is Libby 1-1
Capt. John Libby, born in Scarborough, probably as early as 1665 married Eleanor Kirke on Dec 29 1690, daughter of Henry and Ruth (Glanfield) Kirke of Portsmouth.
He accompanied his father to Portsmouth in 1690. He was a mechanic and we find him mentioned at different times as house-wright, millwright and wheelwright. He, with his uncle Matthew Libby (Libby 11) and others, went down to Scarborough and built a saw mill some years before 1720, and in the winter of 1729-30 he transferred his residence thither, and settled on the original homestead of his grandfather . He was part owner in, and probably the builder of, the gristmill on Libby River, a little below the bridge, afterward known as Fogg's mill. He acquired the title Captain in New Hampshire, and always retained it.
The time of his death is unknown, but it was between August 1746 and December 1751. The last time his wife's name appears in any records is in January 1734.
Their children* were:
1. Elizabeth (Libby 1-1-1) married Seth Ring of Newington, New Hampshire
2. James (Libby 1-1-2) married Mary Furber of Newington.
3. John (Libby 1-1-3) married Mary Miller of Portsmouth
4. Eleanor (Libby 1-1-4) born 1704 married Joseph Fogg (Libby 9-7)
5. Jonathan (Libby 1-1-5) born 1706 married Martha Hasty of Scarborough
6. Josiah (Libby 1-1-6) born 1715 married Anna Small of Scarborough.
*Capt. John Libby (Libby 1-1), like his father, disposed of his property in his lifetime. No full list of his children appears. He probably had a number of daughters whose names can not be learned. It is possible that Agnes is one of those children. More research needs to be done to confirm.
