Uriah Thomas Licklider , 88, of Renville, Minn., died Sunday, December 3, 2006, in Renville. He was born June 17, 1918, at Cherry Valley, Missouri, to Uriah Jacob and Barbara Ellen (Biggs) Licklider . He graduated from Leadwood High School in Leadwood in 1937. During his school days he learned the printing trade working as an apprentice at the Leadwood Press after school, on Saturdays, and during school vacations. After graduation he was employed in Littlefield, Texas, then Welcome, Minnesota. He came to work at the Olivia Times-Journal in June 1938.
Tom married Violet Delight Peterson on June 30, 1940, at First Lutheran Church in Renville, and was baptized in December. Following their marriage, they moved into a new house which they built during that year. Tom joined the U.S. Navy in 1942 and trained as an electrician at Purdue University. He served in the Caribbean and Panama Canal areas aboard the submarine tender Anteous until May of 1945 when he returned to his newspaper printing job in Olivia.
In 1948 Tom and a partner purchased the Renville Star-Farmer in Renville and two years later became sole owner of the newspaper. Tom and Vi moved to Renville in 1949 and together published the paper until 1981 when they sold it to their son Daniel.
Tom was active in community and church work and served with the Community Development Corp., Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club, Boy Scouts, Renville Co. TV Corp., Renville Legion and VFW, Renville Masonic Lodge, and First Lutheran Church council and building committee. He was a founding member of the Renville United Appeal and volunteered for 25 years. Tom enjoyed traveling and spending time with family and friends at their cabin on Lake Florida near Spicer. He owned a Mooney which he piloted over much of the United States. Tom enjoyed meeting people from all walks of life and was an avid reader of newspapers and periodicals. Tom and Vi celebrated 65 years of marriage in June 2005.
He was preceded in death by his wife in April 2006, his parents, sister Hazel, brother Earl, grandson Kyle Licklider , and brothers-in-law John Surina and Bruce Kern.
Tom is survived by his four children: Delight (Dale) Byrd of Omaha, Neb., Tom Licklider , Jr. of North St. Paul and special friend Nancy Besse of New Ulm, Jane Licklider of Seward, Neb., and Daniel (Sandra) Licklider of Renville; five grandchildren: Katie (Ryan) Bell of Atlanta, Ga., Stephanie (James) Newman of Lincoln, Neb., Sonja (Nate) Adams of Prescott, Wisc., Mandy (Kristoff) Licklider Baseman of Mound, and Megan (Ryan) Sand of Spicer; five great grandchildren: Evan and Lauren Bell, Sebastian and Savanna Newman, and Gwenllian Adams; three sisters: Iva Surina, Mabel Kern, and June (Jim) Hulsey, all of Florida; sister-in-law Catherine Licklider of Farmington; brothers-in-law Harold (Doris) Peterson of Danube, and J. Russel Smith of Mill Valley, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, December 8, 2006, at First Lutheran Church in Renville. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Renville. Visitation will be 5 - 7 p.m., Thursday in the Dirks-Blem Funeral Home in Renville.
