James Lifton was born about 1823 in Bristol, Somerset, England.

He was christened 1 June 1823 at St Philip and St Jacob's, Bristol, Gloucester, England.

In the England and Wales Census of 1881 he is age 57, a Fitter, living in Merthyr Tydfill, Glamorgan, Wales with his wife Charlotte (age 47), daughter Charlotte F. (age 9), and son James Herbert F. (age 6).

In the England and Wales Census of 1891 he is age 67, a Boot Shop Manager, living in Swansea with his wife Charlotte (age 57), and daughter Charlotte F. (age 19).

In the England and Wales Census of 1901 he is age 77, living in Swansea, Glamorgan, Wales with his wife Charlotte (age 67), and daughter Lottie (age 29).

In the England and Wales Census of 1911 he is age 88, a retired Shoe Manufacturer, living in Swansea with his wife Charlotte (age 77).
