Samuel Lincoln, Jr. of Windham. Samuel Lincoln, Jr. was born on 20 January 1693, within the year that his father had settled in Windham. Samuel lived in Windham for his whole life, working on the farm and, along with his wife, raising a family.
Samuel married Ruth Huntington in Windham on August 22, 1723. Ruth, who was born 8 August 1699 in Windham, was the daughter of Thoma sand Elizabeth (Backus) Huntington. Both the Huntington and Backus Families were among the first to settle in Windham and Ruth's grandparents were prominent in the early history of the area.
Ruth's father was a justice of the peace in Windham. He was among the first settlers of Windham, having removed there from Norwich, Conn. The name of Thomas Huntington appeared often in the records of the new town. He was among the founders of the Congregational Church of Windham, along with Ruth's father-in-law, Samuel, Sr. Thomas Huntington was ordained a deacon in the church, February 20, 1714-15 and was in the records referred to as "Captain." Ruth's mother, Elizabeth, was also one of the first members of the church; she died in 1728. Thomas died several years later at the age of sixty-eight in Windham; his tombstone reads: "After he had served God and his people, Both in Church and State, he fell asleep in Jesus, November 7, 1732."
Samuel and Ruth had seven children, all of whom were born in Windham: Samuel, born in 1724; John, born in 1726; Nathaniel, born in 1728; Joseph, born in 1730; Jonathan, born in 1731; Daniel, born in 1736; and Eleazar, born in 1754. The last four of their children died within a year of their birth; three of these four died at birth.
Samuel and Ruth were active in the Congregational Church of Windham: Samuel was admitted to the church on 30 November 1735, while his wife was admitted on 29 May 1726. Many of their descendants also were active in the church.
Ruth passed away over 37 years before her husband did, on 26 October 1757 at the age of 58. Perhaps Samuel's strongest claim to fame was his longevity: He lived to be over 100 years old, dying on 27 November 1794.
