These two Family Tree records show that Lottita Corella was born in Michigan in June 1882, and she died, aged 96, in 1978 in Portland, Oregon. Lottita married Thomas Hugh Buckingham. [1][2]
In 1920, the Buckinghams lived in a rented house on Camino Road in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. The household included Hugh Buckingham, Jr., 36, born in California (father b. Wisconsin; mother b. New York), a story writer; and his wife, Lottita Corella Buckingham, 35, born in Michigan (father b. Mexico; mother b. California). [3]
In 1923, the Buckinghams obtained a U.S. passport for travel to Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Great Britain, France, and Spain, and would return within two years. They resided at 2410 Ellsworth St., Berkeley, California, and were to leave from San Francisco on 2 December 1923 aboard the ship Anyo Marie. Thomas Hugh Buckingham III was born in San Francisco, California on 2 October 1883, the son of Thomas Hugh Buckingham (Jr.), born in Janesville, Wisconsin, who resided in Vacaville, CA. Buckingham III was 40, 5’ 9”, blind, and whose right hand was missing. He was a writer. His wife, Lottita (Corella) Buckingham was born in Battle Creek, Michigan. They had married on 3 August 1919. Almost one year after their departure, on 8 November 1924, their passport/visa was extended for another 12 months from Santiago, Chile, where they lived at 2225 Cathedral (street). The reason for the extension, as written by Thomas Hugh Buckingham: “I am studying social conditions of Chile.” [4]
In 1930, the Buckinghams lived at 2626 College Ave., Berkeley, California. Their rent was $32.50 per month, and they had a radio. Thomas H. Buckingham, 47, was a short story writer. He was not a veteran, and was age 35 when he married. His wife, Lottita C. Buckingham, 47, was married at age 36. [5]
The Buckingham home at 2626 College Ave., Berkeley, is very close to the University. It was built in 1908, and designed by famed architect Leola Hall. The house is a two bedroom, 1700sf, wood frame house whose exterior looks like a rustic cabin. Inside it has craftsman details, and has been fully restored/remodeled. [6]
I believe her last name at birth was CORELLA. Her mother’s maiden name was Lindley/Lindlay. I have found no evidence that she changed her name to Lindley. Her maiden name is shown as Corella in her 1923 passport application. I changed her LNAB to CORELLA on 13 April 2021.
The following record needs to be verified: Listing as a teacher at Marlborough Preparatory School in a 1904-1905 Los Angeles city directory. She would have been 22. This is probably her. She came from a family of academics. This could have been her first teaching job. US City and Business Directories, ca. 1749-1990; Los Angeles City Directories, page 320, first column (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CS1M-89K6-8?cc=3754697&personaUrl=%2Fark%3A%2F61903%2F1%3A1%3A6QZL-BG3Z)
Similar name, but definitely not this Lottita Corella. Death record: (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-L9SF-XP3C?i=109&cc=2001287&personaUrl=%2Fark%3A%2F61903%2F1%3A1%3AQGTV-5PS2)
