On 8 May 1633 John Lindsay, 10th Lord Lindsay of the Byres, was created Earl of Lindsay, with remainder to him and his heirs male bearing the name and arms of Lindsay. In Nov 1652 he succeeded his kinsman as 17th Earl of Crawford under the terms of the 15 Jan 1641/2 regrant of the Earldom of Crawford.
The Earldom of Lindsay was held by the Earls of Crawford until 30 Jan 1808, when on the death of George Lindsay, 22nd Earl of Crawford and 6th Earl of Lindsay, the Earldom of Crawford passed to Alexander Lindsay, 6th Earl of Balcarres, and the Earldom of Lindsay became dormant.
By a retrospective decision of the House of Lords on 5 Apr 1878, it was deemed to have been inherited by his eighth cousin once removed, David Lindsay of Kirkforthar.
