The son of Frank Lindsley Sr and Stella (Genung) Lindsley, Carlton was born in Allegan County in 1890.[1] In 1900, his family farmed in Decatur Township, in Van Buren County.[2][3]He married Hazel Merritt (1892-1976), the daughter of William M. Merritt and Nancy Jane Elder, marrying in Decatur Township on October 20, 1910.[4]
In 1920, living in Decatur Township, Carleton worked as a photographer. His household included his widowed mother-in-law, Nancy Merritt.[5] By 1930, Carleton and Hazel were living in South Bend, Indiana, where Carleton worked as a music teacher.[6] In 1940, residing in Concord Township, in Elkhart County, Carleton had his own music studio, The Detroit Studio of Music, teaching music.[7] Carlton passed away at Elkhart General Hospital at the age of 52 from the effects of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.[8] He is buried at Lakeside Cemetery in Decatur Township.[9]
