Biography

Birth Date Conflict

Martin was born 30 July 1761 and baptized in Christ-Little Tulpehocken Church on 2 August 1761.[1]

Ida Vincent gives Martin an estimated birth date of 1736, assuming that he came with his father on the "Saint Andrew" in 1737, and that he died in about 1782.[2] and J.M. Runk, on the other hand gives an estimated birth date of 1738. He goes further and says the married Elizabeth (----) and was a resident of "Paxtang" in 1789.[3]

However, there is no evidence that he was on the Saint Andrew, and later marriage and census records make more sense if we assume his birth date was shortly before his baptism. John Schlenker asserts that Martin was born 30 July 1761 in Berks County, Pennsylvania, citing Weiser's Tulpehocken Church Records.[4]

Finally, we know from his father's will that John was the eldest brother. Martin could not be older than John, who was baptised in 1741.[5]

Until proven otherwise, a birth year of 1761 seems most plausible.

Married Life

He married Elisabetha Kettner on 26 March 1782 in Berks County.[4]

Together they had the following known children:

  1. Jacob, baptized 3 Aug 1786[6]
  2. John Martin[A][4]
  3. Caspar[4]
  4. Mary Salome, baptized 5 Aug 1798[7]
  5. Barbara?

(Barbara Lengel petitioned the Orphans Court of Berks County on 7 May 1806 stating that she was minor above the age of fourteen, and that she was the daughter of Martin Lingel, deceased. It is possible that she was the third female enumerated in the 1790 census.[8])

He was named as an heir in his father's will of 1786. He was also enjoined to do "all labor or work" which his mother wanted to have done.[9]

Martin Lingle was enumerated in Lower Paxton, Dauphin, Pennsylvania on the 1786 census of Pennsylvania.[10]

He was again enumerated on the 1790 census, with a household of seven: 3 males under 16, one male over 16, and three females.[11]

Death

There is no solid evidence for Martin after the 1790 census, except for the Orphan's Court petition by Barbara in 1806.[8] If she was his daughter, then we at least have a "no later than" death date.
