Biography

Confusion regarding which Lipke family emigrated when is due to two sources: the emigration lists associated with the family of Maria Magdalena (Lemmers) Lipke and the family of Maria Magdalena (Lauersdorf) Lipke. Both families seem to have originated in Neu Barnim. Heinrich (Henry) Lipke born 1829 or 1830 is associated with the family of Maria Magdalena Lemmers Lipke.

Henry is said to have emigrated with his mother. The Outagamie County History says they first came to Germantown in Dodge County. In Dodge County in the 1850 Census are found three Lipke siblings from the Lauersdorf/Lipke family. These are William age 26, Henry, age 20, and Caroline, age 15. They follow the family of Martin Melcher, who was on the passenger list with them.[1] A Henry Lipke took up land in Washington County.[2]

Henry Lipke and his wife Henrietta were living in Ellington Township, Outagamie, Wisconsin in 1860. They had no children yet. He was age 30, she 25. Both were born in Prussia.[3]

The Lipke family was living in the same place in 1870. Their daughter, Helen, was 9 years old.[4]

A son was born to them after 1870; he died before 1880.

By 1880 Helen was married to Charles Mueller. Charles and Helen were living in the household.[5]

The 1900 Census for Appleton 3rd Ward, Outagamie, Wisconsin contains the following information. Henry Lipke was b Feb 1830 in Germany, age 70. He emigrated in 1847, 53 years ago, and was naturalized. He had been married 44 years. His wife, Henrieta, was b Jan 1835 in Germany, age 65. She emigrated in 1854, 46 years ago. She had been married 44 years. She was the mother of 2 children, 1 then living. They were living at 498 State Road in Appleton.[6]
