Military Service:
It is not clear why he, at the age of 30, a skilled metal worker with several children, volunteered for military service. At the beginning of the 20th century, an unskilled labourer would earn about £1 per week in the iron works at Port Clarence. A more skilled worker would take home about £2 per week and an experienced skilled worker £3 or more.[13]
Pay in the Imperial Yeomanry was 5/- per day (just under £2 per week), and married men were not discouraged. At the start and end of his service he received advances of pay totalling about £45. Perhaps used for a deposit for a house purchase. Early residence, New Cottages, would have been rented from the employer, Bell Brothers.
