Biography

There are no solid sources regarding the birth of Rachel (Livingstone) Stowell. Some believe she was born in 1802 and others, 1805. Location of her birth is also in question, not being sure if she was born in Blantyre, Scotland or in Vermont. Many fall back on the 1922 book written by William Henry Harrison Stowell, "The Stowell Genealogy, A Record of the Descendants of Samuel Stowell of Hingham, Mass." In his book, on pages 331 & 332, he states that "Joseph Stowell was born in Waitsfield, Vt., 27 Oct 1798, d. Lindon, Ws., May 1865, age 66, m. 1820, Rachel Livingstone, b. 6 May 1802, d. Minnewaukon, N.D., 27 March 1888, age 86." Did Mr. Stowell find this information during his research for his book?

In another book, ""The History and Genealogy of Isaac and Sarah Burgess", by Eugene Jay Nielsen, on page 5, the writer states "Rachel Stowell came to Dakota Territory with Isaac and Ethie (Burgess) Kennedy, a couple years before Isaac H. and Sarah (Stowell) Burgess came. When Isaac and Sarah came to Minnewaukan, Rachel lived with them. She died during the winter of 1887-88 and was buried that spring on the Burgess claim. When the Isaac Kennedy's moved to Minnewaukan, they moved Rachel's body to the Presbyterian Cemetery at Minnewaukan. There is no trace of any buildings of the Burgess homestead."

Rachel was born in 1802. She passed away in 1887.

Thank you for your note about the merge of Livingston-3362 and Livingstone-250. Yes, Rachel Livingston is the mother of Joseph Salu Stowell and 12 other siblings, and wife of Joseph Stowell-312. As you point out in the biography, there has not been any proof to show that she is the same Rachel who was born in Scotland. If they are merged she would have unproven parentage. The reference to a database in Ancestry.com that is in the sources is a different lineage. Accordingly, in my research I haven't determined that Livingston-3362 and Livingstone-250 are the same woman, even though they have the same name.

Livingston-3362 and Livingstone-250 appear to represent the same person because: Documented research shows that Livingstone-250 is the mother of Stowell-903 (as well as the other 11 children). Livingston-3362 shares the same husband with Livingstone-250 (Stowell-312). Their death places were the same (Minnewaukan, North Dakota), with the date of death being verified by the gravestone in the Minnewaukan Cemetery as resourced in the Livingstone-250 profile.
