Biography

Elizabeth Mary Phillips (nee Lloyd) 1840 - 1931

Elizabeth Mary Lloyd was born 1840 and baptised on April 24th of that year in Tenby, Pembrokeshire. She was the eldest daughter, and third child of seven, born to John (a tailor) and Mary (a servant) Lloyd. Her GRO Birth Certificate reads:

167 / Thirtieth of March 1840 at Wind Pipe Lane, Parish of St. Mary, Tenby / Elizabeth Mary / Girl / John Lloyd / Mary Lloyd, formerly Rees / Tailor / The mark of X Mary Lloyd, Mother, Wind Pipe Lane / Thirtieth of March 1840 / George Allen, Registrar.

When Elizabeth was about 5 years old the family moved to Pembroke, firstly to Monkton, and then to places in East End Back (St. Michael`s), Green Alley and Main Street (both St. Mary`s). In 1861 Elizabeth was listed as a servant, living with her parents in Green Alley, Pembroke.

On 26th October 1869 at St Mary Redcliffe in Bristol, Elizabeth married post-master`s son Arthur Isaac Phillips of Dale in Pembrokeshire. By 1871 they had moved to 11 Wood Street, Cardiff, in the heart of what was then called `Temperance Town`. (Next to where the Millennium Stadium has been built).

Their first child, William A. L. Phillips was born there in 1870. Sometime between 1873 and 1878, due to her husband`s work, they moved to 17 Oddfellows Row in Bridgend, and shortly afterwards to 1 Green St, Coity, as can be seen on the Census of 1881.

Tragedy struck in 1883 when Arthur died of typhus, aged just 38. Elizabeth was left to bring up their five remaining children: WA (13), Albert (11), Edith (9), Ernest (4) and Arthur (one month).

Albert and Arthur moved away for work, but her first son, William (WA), married and lived with his family in the very nearby Charles St from 1899 until1905. After that WA and family moved five miles down the road to Cowbridge.

Elizabeth died on February 13th, 1931, aged 91 years. Her passing is noted in the family bible, which was probably written in by her eldest son, WA. She was buried on the 17th of February, 1931 at Coity Cemetery.

Elizabeth's GRO Death Certificate reads: "487 / Thirteenth February 1931 1 Green Street Bridgend U.D. / Elizabeth Mary Phillips / Female / 90 Years / Widow of Arthur Isaac Phillips a Post Office Inspector / 1a: Myocardial Degeneration; b: Senility; No P.M. Cetified by Jeffrey W. Jones M.R.C.S. / W.A. L. Phillips Son Broadshord Cowbridge / Fourteenth February / Ivor Lloyd Isaac Registrar."
