Valeriy (pronounced here) was а Soviet-Ukrainian football player and manager.
Valeriy Vasylyovych Lobanovsky [Лобановський Валерій Васильович] was born 6 Jan 1939 in Kiev, Ukraine, which was then a republic of the Soviet Union. His parents were Vasyl Mykhailovyc Lobko-Lobanovsky and Oleksandra Maksymivna (Biochenko) Lobanovska. He had one brother, Yevhen. Because the Soviet Union frowned upon the use of double surnames, Valeriy and his brother took on only the second of their father's hyphenated names.
Valeriy is also known to have had an aunt named Maria Ustimenko and a cousin named Vladimir Vakulenko.
During his coaching career, Valeriy led the national teams of the USSR, the United Arab Emirates, Ukraine and Kuwait, as well as the football clubs Dynamo Kyiv and Dnipro. Under his leadership, the Kiev club won the USSR championship eight times, triumphed in the USSR Cup six times, became the champion of Ukraine five times and won the Ukrainian Cup three times. Also, under Lobanovsky, the white-blues won the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup twice - in 1975 they beat the Hungarian Ferencvaros (3: 0), and in 1986 - Atlético Madrid (3: 0).
He married his wife, Lyudmyla in 1978. [1] They had a daughter, Svitlana, who was married to Valery Gorbik.
He passed away 13 May 2002, in Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine.
