Biography

Stephen Lofts was baptised in Mildenhall, Suffolk, 5 Feb 1824. He was the son of John Lofts and Ann.^[1]

Stephen married Sarah Turrington at Mildenhall in 1851 (she was a widow and her name was recorded as Sally Greenacre).^[2]

The family migrated to Australia as assisted immigrants via the David McIver, arriving 2nd September 1853. Stephen was a railway labourer, able to read and write, his father was still living at Mildenhall.^[3] Their children on board were Eliza, George, and Anne Greenacre from Sarah's first marriage, and 11 month old Emily Lofts.

After Sarah's death in 1859, he remarried to widow Annie Eoa Williams at Sydney, 6 February 1860.^[4] They had seven more children together.

He died from heart failure on the 10th June 1898 at his home, 109 Yule St. Petersham,^[5] and was buried at Rookwood.^[6][7][8]
