Biography

Andrew was born in 1812. He was the son of Andrew Logan and Nancy Meriwether. He passed away in 1850.

Andrew married Louisa Carolina Fooshe on 5 Dec 1837 in South Carolina. Their children: [1]

  1. Augustus Logan, 1839 - 1839
  2. Martha Huldah Logan, 1841 - 1870
  3. Lucy Anna Logan, 1843 - 1897
  4. William Henry Logan, 1845 - 1918
  5. Frederick Tyler Logan, 1849

He is found on the 1850 Mortality census for Abbeville County, South Carolina. He died Apr 1850, age 37, of pneumonia, occupation listed as teacher. [2]

He is buried at Damascus Baptist Church Cemetery. His tombstone reads:

TO THE MEMORY of
ANDREW J. LOGAN
Who was born Feb'y 15th, A. D. 1812
and departed this life
April 22nd, A. D. 1850.
Aged 38 years 2 months & 7 days.
Remember man as you pass by
As you are now, so once was I.
As I am now, so you will be.
Prepare for death and follow me.

Research Notes

His tombstone says that he died 22 Apr 1850 but a case in equity court by his widow, Louisa, says that he died 20 Apr 1850:

To the honr. Chancellors:

Your oratrix, Louisa Logan a feme sole and Huldah Riley a fem sol (an unmarried woman) infant dau of Louisa Logan under the age of twenty-one. That Andrew J. Logan departed this life 20 Apr 1850 leaving in full force his will and testament. Frederick B. Logan was executor and has management of the estate. The will sheweth that A. J. Logan, the husband of your oratrix and father of Hulda Riley directed that after his death his executor was to sell all the surplus land and stock, keeping a small farm to support his family, until the younges child becomes of age. The executor has sold the property held by A. J. Logan and has purchased another place containing 217 acres and 9 negroies is all that is left in the possession of your oratrix. The said property lies on Curtail, and is adj by land of William Smith, Silas Ray and known as the Hughey Place, the land purchased is worn out and impossible to make a support upon it, and that the estate is more indebted now than when A. J. Logan died. The Negroes are viz: Ephraim abt 50 yrs., Jess abt 40 yrs., Waller abt 25 yers, Will abt 22 yers, Dick 18 yrs, Rose, a woman, 38 yrs, Sallie abt 20 yrs with 2 children: John & Charles . . . Your oratrix and Huldah Riley your complaint and Lucy Logan, William Logan, Tyler Logan are the legatess under the will of A. J. Logan. Tyler the youngest in his 11th year, Huldah the eldest is in the 18th yr. Filed 10 May 1860. [3]
