George was born in 1839 in Long Combe, Oxfordshire.[1] He was the son of David Long and Martha Wickson. His baptism took place on 14th April 1839 at St Laurence's, Combe on 14th April 1839. Her father gave his occupation on the baptism register as sawyer, and stated that the family were living in "Long Coombe in the part of it called East End".[2]

George's mother was given on the baptism register as Hannah, however the birth registration states his mother's maiden name was Wickson and censuses make clear he was the child of David and Martha.
