He emigrated to Queensland, Australia and married Elizabeth Ellen Wallis in Emerald, Queensland.[2][3]
In about 1910 the family emigrated to New Zealand where one of their sons had already established himself.[2]
He lived at Owen road, Whataupoko and was the overseer on the Borough septic tank works at Gisborne, but took ill and gradually became worse, passing away on 17 May 1911, [4]age 56.[5] He was buried 18 May 1911 at Makaraka Cemetery, Gisborne.[6]

His death clipping specified a widow, three sons, and two daughters including Messrs A.F. and C.J. Long.
