John was born about 1810. His LNAB is not yet known, but since he goes by John Long, Long will be used temporarily. Long may have been the surname of an earlier enslaver.
In 1856, John Shepard's estate was divided. Some of the enslaved came from Shepards Place Plantation, Leon County, Florida and some came from New Hope Plantation, Leon County, Florida. Patience was apparently from Shepards Place Plantation, Leon County, Florida. John was in the Lot No.3 that went to Mrs. Julia Pettes. He was listed in a family group which included: John Long age 46, Jane age 37, John age 9 months (child of Jane), Julia age 15, Henry age 13, Austin age 8, Millard age 5, Josiah age 2. It is suspected that John was Jane's common law husband, and the father of her child, John. The other children may have been John's from a previous relationship, or Jane's, or both of theirs together. For now they are being attached as if his and Jane's.[1]
