Biography

Georgiana was born on 4 September 1860 in Canton, Maine, probably the daughter of Dianthia Lothrop, but was raised by her grandparents, Benjamin Lothrop and Abigail Whitney.[1]

On 4 March 1878, Georgiana filed intentions to marry Osaman C. Jones in Canton.[2] On 14 Mar 1878, Georgiana and Osaman were married at Jay by A.P. Adams, Justice of the Peace.[3] In April of 1880 Georgiana left her husband and returned to the home of her grandfather in Canton. She returned to her husband until November of 1882, wen she left him again and returned to her grandfather's home. On 15 February 1883 she wrote a libel for divorce, which was filed the next month, and the divorce was decreed on 28 March 1884 on the grounds of cruel and abusive treatment.[4]

After the divorce was decreed Georgiana moved to Waltham, Massachusetts, where she worked as a dressmaker. On 25 September 1884, Georgiana married William Scholes as her second husband.[5][6] They continued to reside in Massachusetts, moving to Quincy by 1900,[7] and later moving to Manchester, New Hampshire, where they spent the rest of their lives.[8] Georgiana died in Manchester from cerebral thrombosis.[1]

Researcher's Notes

Georgiana listed Benjamin Lothrop and Abigail Whitney as her parents on her marriage record to William Scholes[5] and Dianthia is listed as her sister on census records from 1900 to 1930. However, in her divorce record she says that she returns to the home of her grandfather[4] in April of 1880. If she were the daughter of Benjamin and Abigail, all of her grandparents would have died before she was born. In his will, Benjamin Lothrop lists Georgiana as his granddaughter.[9] These records would require this information to be accurate so it is likely that Benjamin and Abigail are her grandparents. She is also the only child not listed in the family record of the Lothrop family in Canton town records.[10]

Her mother has not been identified with any direct evidence, but Dianthia would have been twenty at the time of Georgiana's birth, Dianthia was the only child of Benjamin and Abigail to be a witness in her divorce proceedings, and Dianthia spent the remainder of her life living with Georgiana in New Hampshire, never marrying. It is possible that Dianthia's sisters, Cynthia, Susan, and Sarah could be her mother, as they would have been old enough and were not married by the time of her birth. Dianthia seems the most likely candidate but this has not been proven.
