Biography

Sarah (Lowe) Knighton was born in Huntingdonshire, England.

Sarah was baptised at Alconbury, Huntingdonshire on January 27, 1828, the daughter of William Lowe and Susan Ward. Her mother died in March of the following year, and her father remarried shortly after and she was raised by her stepmother, Ann Coddington.

She married Samuel Knighton on January 25, 1848 at St Giles' Church in Holme, Huntingdonshire. With Samuel, she had fifteen children, fourteen of which survived to adulthood. This was a remarkable survival rate in the Victorian era.

The family lived in Holme until the 1891 census, where she and her husband Samuel are living at Great Whyte, Ramsey. Samuel died in 1896.

In the 1901 census, Sarah is seen living with her youngest daughter Esther and her family in Kimberley, Nottinghamshire.

By 1911, however, Sarah can be found in the workhouse at Huntingdon. She died in the infirmary a few months later on June 19, 1911. She was 83 years old.
