Biography
Caroline Lowndes was born in 1839 in Wolstanton, Staffordshire, England to Matthew Lowndes and Sarah (Ashmore) Lowndes. Her birth was registered in Wolstanton in the last quarter of the year, with mother's maiden name Ashmore.[1]
Caroline Lowndes, daughter of Matthew & Sarah, was christened on 5 Jan 1840 at St Margaret's in Wolstanton.[2][3]
In 1841 Caroline Lowndes (age 1) lived in Wolstanton with her father Matthew (25-29), mother Sarah (25-29), and two sisters: Harriett (7) and Mary (4).[4]
In 1851 Caroline Lowndes (age 11, Scholar) lived in Sandbach, Cheshire with her father Matthew (38, Boot & Shoe Maker), mother Sarah (35), brother Matthew Henry (4), and sister Elizabeth (2).[5]
In 1861 Caroline Loundes (age 21, House Servant) lived in Penkhull, Staffordshire in the household of her employer Spencer Thomas Garrett - her sisters Harriett (26, Ladys Maid) and Mary (23, House Servant) were also employed in the household.[6]
Caroline Lowndes (age 22, residing at Stoke, daughter of Matthew Lowndes) and Frederick Smith (age 24, residing at Stoke, son of Thomas Smith) were married on 21 Apr 1862 at St Peter ad Vincula in Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire.[7] The marriage was registered in Stoke on Trent in the second quarter of the year.[8]
Caroline and Frederick had at least three children:
In 1881 Caroline Smith (age 41) lived in Stoke upon Trent with her husband Frederick (45, China Presser) and three daughters: Sarah Jane (17, Pupil Teacher), Catherine (15, Paintress P), and Maud Mary (5, Scholar).[9][10]
In 1891 Caroline Smith (age 50) lived at London Road in [Stoke upon Trent] with her husband Frederick (55, China Presser Potters) and two daughters: Katherine (24, Paintress) and Maud Mary (15, Dressmaker), as well as boarder Clara Painter (24, School Mistress).[11]
In 1901 Caroline Smith (age 61) lived at London Road in Stoke upon Trent with her husband Fredrick (65, Potters China Presser) and daughter Maud (25, Dress Maker).[12]
Caroline's husband passed away in 1904.
In 1911 Caroline Smith (age 71) lived in Stoke upon Trent with her daughter Mary M (35) and two nieces Molly Smith (8) and Connie Smith (6).[13]
Caroline Smith passed away in 1912, aged 72 years. Her death was registered in Stoke on Trent in the last quarter of the year.[14]
