Biography

Thomas Lucas came free to the Colony of Victoria (1851-1900)

Thomas Pennington Lucas was born in July 1843 in or about Dumbarton in Dunbartonshire, Scotland, the son of the Reverend Samuel Lucas F.G.S. and his wife Elizabeth (nee Broadhurst).

Thomas Pennington Lucas also known as T.P. Lucas, was a Scottish-born Australian medical practitioner, naturalist, author, philosopher and utopianist. His brother Arthur Henry Shakespeare Lucas was an English-born schoolmaster, scientist and publisher who lived in Australia for over fifty years, and became the most renowned writer on Algae after William Henry Harvey.

Thomas Pennington Lucas married at least 3 times. Firstly to Mary Sarah Frances Davies (1845 – 1875) in June 1868 at or about Westminster, Middlesex, England, United Kingdom. They had 4 children:

John William Guy Lucas (1868–1889)
Thomas Pennington Lucas (1870–1906)
Arthur Henry S. Lucas (1871–Deceased)
Celia Juliana Lucas (1874–1945)

When he contracted tuberculosis, Dr Thomas Lucas Immigrated to the Australian Colonies. This was before his second marriage in 1878, and well before January 1879, when his 3 youngest children also migrated there on their own.

In the Colony of Victoria he married Mary Bradbury Ironside (1848 – 1888) in about 1878, and they appeared to have had 4 children:

Beatrice Mary Lucas (1883–Deceased)
Harold Ernest Lucas (1884–1985)
Eunice Sarah Lucas (1886–Deceased)
Irene Mary Lucas (1888–1888)

Then in late January 1889 in the Colony of Queensland, he married Susan Draper (1847 – 1933) but had no more children.

Thomas Lucas published a number of books during his lifetime, mostly on non-fiction topics. Some however were works of fiction; such as The Curse and its Cure, comprising two novels bound and published together in 1894, The Ruins of Brisbane in the Year 2000 and Brisbane Rebuilt in the Year 2200. These novels are believed to be the first to be published anywhere that use Brisbane Queensland as their setting.
