Biography

Henry Lucas was born in Brighton, Sussex, England.

James Henry Lucas was born on 21 Jan 1871 in Brighton, Sussex, England to John Lucas and Mary Elizabeth Pont.^{[1] [2]}

He lived with his parents in Brighton when he was very young.^[3]

The family moved to London sometime before 1875. In 1881, he was still living with his family in Battersea, Surrey.^[4]

His brother Edward's army service record shows that his "Elder Brother Henry Lucas" was in the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry (no dates given).^[5]

Henry enlisted in the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry on 16 Jan 1891 with the service number 3248.^[6] He was already in the 3rd East Surrey Regiment. His mother was listed as Mary Lucas living in Brixton, Surrey.

While he was with the Light Infantry, he served in England between 16 Dec 1892 and 19 Feb 1893 and in the north-east of India and Burma between 20 Feb 1893 and 20 Apr 1894. While in India, he was stationed in Mandalay, Meerut, Chakrata and Lucknow although he doesn't seem to have seen major action. He was discharged due to developing partial deafness which was not caused by service in the army. On his discharge, he returned to London, England.

Henry married Maria Sarah Fox in the third quarter of 1897 in the district of Wandsworth, London.^[7]

They cannot be located on the 1901 England Census. In 1911, they were living in Wandsworth, London where Henry was working as a builder's labourer.^[8]

In 1939, they were once again living in Battersea.^[2] He is shown as an engineer's labourer.

James Henry Lucas died in the third quarter of 1954 in the district of Lambeth, London.^[9] He was 83 years old.
