Biography

John Wesley Luffman was born on 31 Dec 1820 in Charlotte, Mecklenburg, North Carolina, USA as the first child of William L Luffman and Charity Francis Watson. He died on 03 May 1865 in Virginia, USA. When he was 23, he married Mary Ann Irwin on 08 Nov 1844.

His Ancestral File Number is 2T14-9ZV. LifeSketch: (Obtained from Find a Grave) John served in the Confederate Army, Co. K 9th Fla. Inf. during the Civil War. In the last part of the Richmond campaign, he and his son, Henry, were both in Virginia in the same outfits. After Gen. Lee’s surrender at Appomattox, the Southern troops, exhausted and weak from lack of food, began the long, weary journey homeward — most of them on foot. On the way somewhere in Virginia, John Luffman and another Florida soldier, who were traveling together, stopped at a farm­house to ask for food and coffee. As soon as John took a drink of his coffee, he became violently ill. He told his companion not to drink his, for he believed the coffee was poisoned. In a short time John died, leaving his final message and few belongings in care of his friend to be delivered to his family back in Florida. No one knows whether his death was due to poisoning, as he suspected, or whether it was the result of sheer exhaustion and lack of food.The friend did make his way safely and brought the news of the death and subsequent burial in Hampton National Cemetery of John Luffman, and he delivered the entrusted belongings to the grieving family -­little keepsakes that meant so much to a lonely soldier far from home, a few faded letters, a piece or two of money, locks of hair of each little daughter!

He was buried in National Cemetery, Culpeper, Virginia, USA.
