Rowland John Lumby was born on 2 October 1861 in Wollombi, New South Wales, Australia, the son of Jacob and Kezia (Clark) Lumby^[1]. He was the brother of Emily Rebecca (Lumby) Shields, Minney Victoria (Lumby) Franks, Victoria Jessie Jane Lumby, Walter Laban Wells Lumby and Ada Adeline Lumby.

He married Margaret Cecelia (Griffin) Lumby on 1886 in Greta, New South Wales, Australia^[2] and they were the parents of Mary E. Lumby, Grace H. Lumby, Veronica C. Lumby, Aloysius Lumby, Theela M. Lumby, Teresa Minnie Lumby, Bernadette Lumby, Ada Lumby and Emmie Lumby.
