Biography

George Lumsden's father was also named George Lumsden, with the senior George serving as Louisa county Deputy sheriff for many years. He also operated an "ordinary" tavern, which served meals and also served as a voting place for Louisa County, VA. The younger George Lumsden was a Captain in the Louisa County Militia [Twelve Virginia Counties by John Gwathmey], during the Rev War, and he also served as Deputy sheriff of Louisa County, VA. The younger George Lumsden married Elizabeth Duke in Louisa County, May 15, 1773, [Louisa County marriages book [1] page 7. Elizabeth Duke was born around 1753 and was the daughter of Cleavers[Cluverius] Duke and Amy Cosby. Her father was a very wealthy man, owning much land. The younger George Lumsden was one of the executors of Clevears Dukes estate, and he had deeded George and Elizabeth Lumsden 400 acres of land, [recorded in Book "E", page 236 of the Louisa County, Land Deeds]. [Henry Duke, Councilor, His Descendants and Connections], by Walter Garland Duke. George served in the American Revolution in the same Company as John Lumsden, another of the Older George Lumsden's sons. The younger George Lumsden was appointed Coroner of Louisa County October 13, 1779. He had taken the same role as his father, serving as Sub-Sheriff or Deputy. In Deed Book "J", page 28 of the Louisa County Records, we found this entry. A Deed of Trust, made 24 December 1799, George Lumsden to William Mansfield, all of Louisa County, $1.00, tract of undivided land containing 2,222 3/4 acres, being part of a larger tract containing 6,800 1/2 acres in state of Kentucky, which larger tract was granted said George Lumsden, John Bagby, Robert Kimbrough, and John Fowler by patent August 1, 1793 and signed by Issac Shelby, Govenor of Kentucky, located in Bourbon County, on Sandy River. Recorded 7 June 1800, and proved by Mordecai Cooke and Edward Cooke, witnesses.:

Augt. 3, 1767. John Davenport of Spts. Co. and Mary, his wife, and George Lumsden of Louisa, to Andrew Cochrane, Wm. Cunninghame, John Stewart & Co. of City of Glasgow, Merchts. £120 curr. to sd. Davenport and wife and 5 shill. to sd. Lumsden. 320 a. in Spts. Co., first granted Wm. Smith by pat. and the sd. Smith, dying intestate the tract descended to Thomas Ballard Smith, his eldest :

Dec. 8, 1767. George Lumsden of Louisa Co. to Andrew Cochrane, Wm. Cunningham & Co., Merchts., in Glasgow. Transfers any interest he may have in a certain tract of land lately mortgaged to him by John Davenport of Spts. Co., etc. No witnesses. Deer. 8, 1767.:

Book: S, Page: 159, Grantor: Geo. Lumsden, Grantee: Nathl and Chas. Thompson, Date: 21-Nov-1829 In trust 1 Negro woman Ailsy and her daughter Sally in trust from Geo. Lumsden to Nathl and Chas. Thompson to secure and save himself harmless. George Lumsden makes this deed since his wife Elizabeth did not make her relinquishment in deed Lumsden to John W. Harris.:

Book: G, Page: 238, Grantor: George Lumsden and Elizabeth his wife by 8 day, Grantee: Nathaniel Dickenson, Date: 10-Sep-1792 Whereas George Lumsden and Elizabeth his wife by deed 8 day of 1782 agreed to convey to Nathaniel Dickenson a tract containing 200 acres. Elizabeth cannot travel, her relinquishment by James Overton and Samuel Ragland justices. Rec. 10 Sep 1792.:

Book: I, Page: 377, Grantor: George Lumsden and Elizabeth his wife, Grantee: George Pottie, Date: 22-Nov-1797 George Lumsden and Elizabeth his wife to George Pottie all of Louisa £277 14s 6p for tract in Louisa on Rocky Creek being land I now live on adjoining Thomas Wash, George Smith, Nelson Moss, and Francis Jerdone containing 241 1/2 acres. Wit. Thomas Wash (BH), William Cooke, Samuel Overton, Jr., Malcolm Hart, Christo. Smith Rec. 8 Jan 1798.:

In trust that George Lumsden pay to Archibald Dick £151 with interest from this date to 1 Jan 1795 or Dick can reenter this land. Sig. George Lumsden, Arch. Dick, Jr. wit. Wm. Pottie, Wm. Budding, Elizabeth W. Armistead, Susanna Dick. Rec. 14 Feb 1771.:

Book: J, Page: 28, Grantor: George Lumsden to William Mansfield, Grantee: William Mansfield, Date: 07-Jun-1800 Deed of Trust, 24 Dec 1799 George Lumsden to William Mansfield all of Louisa $1, tract of undivided land containing 2,222 3/4 acres being part of a larger tract containing 6,800 1/2 acres in state of Kentucky, which larger tract was granted said George Lumsden, Jno. Bagby, Robert Kimbrough, John Fowler by patent 1 Aug 1793 and signed by Isaac Shelby, Gov. of Kentucky in Bourbon County on Sandy River. Said 2,222 3/4 acres all that belonged to Lumsden. In trust George Lumsden indebted to David Crenshaw, Joel Crenshaw, and John Burnley committee of estate of Will. Crenshaw. £9 4s 6p. If not paid Mansfield to sell said Kentucky land at Louisa Court house to highest bidder. Rec. 7 Jun 1800 and proved by Mordecai and Edward Cooke witnesses.:
