Biography

Carl Samuel was born in Cranston, Rhode Island, in 1897, the son of Rev. Joseph and Sofie Wilhelmina (Klint) Lund. [1] He lived in Beverly, Massachusetts, in 1900,[2] and the family removed to Somerville, Massachusetts, by 1910.[3] He attended Forster Grammar School in Somerville, where he and his brother Roy graduated in 1910.[4]

He married Edith May Sanford, daughter of William and Elizabeth Sanford, on March 31, 1917, in Everett, Massachusetts.[5]

Carl enlisted in the Massachusetts National Guard, Troop D, 1st Sep. Sq., Cav., on May 24, 1917. He was deployed overseas in September 1917 with Co. B, 102nd Machine Gun Battalion, 26th Division. He was promoted to Corporal in November of 1918. Carl died of pneumonia at Dion, France, on March 13, 1919.[6] His brother Paul Lund also died during the war. Carl is buried at the Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.[7]

He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross "for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 102d Machine-Gun Battalion, 26th Division, A.E.F., near Mouilly, France, 12 September 1918. At great risk of his own life from machine-gun fire at close range, Private Lund volunteered and went to the aid of a wounded comrade, bandaged his wounds, and helped him to a place of safety." [8]
