Name: Moyses Lunsford[1][2][3][4]
Both original sources give Moyses as his first name but modern author, Richardson, spells the name as "Moses".
Parents: John Lunsford, Knt. (abt.1551-bef.1618)[1] and Anne Apsley[5] (please see Research Notes)
Baptised: 24 January 1584/5 (1585 in modern reckoning) at Lewes, Sussex, England:[2][3] this points to a likely birth year of 1584.
Children: (none)[4]
The 1837 Lunsford pedigree added "obijt s. p." to his name. This is Latin for "died without issue"[4]
Moyses probably died before 3 June 1613: Thomas Lunsford was his younger brother, assuming a January 1585/6 baptism record is for this Thomas Lunsford.[6] In an adjudication for a family dispute over lands on 3 June 1613, Thomas was described as his father's oldest son and heir apparent, almost certainly meaning the oldest surviving son.[7]
Douglas Richardson states that the mother of Moyses and his brother Thomas was his father's first wife Barbara Lewknor. She died before 26 August 1577, when her husband entered into an indenture for his marriage to his second wife Anne Apsley.[8] Richardson's view appears to be based on a pedigree in an article in the 1837 edition of Collectanea Topgraphica et Genealogica. This pedigree is based on one drawn up in 1648 for George Owen, Yorke Herald of the College of Arms, but it also has additions and changes (with no clear sourcing) by the author of the article. A similar memorandum, also bearing a 1648 date, was attached to the 1633-4 Sussex Visitation.[4] The Lunsford pedigree in the Harleian Society edition of the actual 1530 and 1633/4 Sussex Visitations stops at the generation of Moyses's father John Lunsford, and does not name John Lunsford's wives or children.[9]
Weis's Magna Carta Sureties names Anne Apsley as Moyses' mother.[10] So does Faris's Plantagenet Ancestry.[5]
The 1584/5 baptism record for Moyses[2][3] suggests strongly that Richardson is wrong and that Ann Apsley was Moyses' mother. Further evidence is provided by a 1585/6 baptism record for a Thomas Lunsford, son of John, at All Saints, Lewes, Sussex on 18 March 1585/6:[6] this Thomas would appear to be Moyses' brother. This is corroborated by DNA analysis: Lunsford descendants in this line have segments of Apsley DNA but not a trace of Lewknor DNA.
A Moses Langforde married Margaret Tavner in Cornwall on 15 September 1603.[11] Even allowing for the vagaries of spelling of the time, this is very unlikely to be the Moyses of this profile since he died without issue and the family had no known Cornish connections.
There is no evidence that any Lunsfords in Virginia had a direct connection to Moses Lunsford of this profile.
