Biography

Joseph Marshall Lynn was born on 6 October 1806, the son of Richard Linn and Eleanor Marshall.[1] From 1856 to 1889, he was a Surgeon and Medical Officer for the Armagh Light Infantry.[2][3][4]
On the 23rd July 1835, he married Ann Jane Chapman at Aghalee parish church in Soldierstown, county Antrim.[5][6] On Christmas Day of 1839, twins were born at Market-hill [County Armagh] to "the Lady of J. M. Lynne, Esq. M.D.,[7] but the children apparently did not survive since no children were named in Dr. Lynn's will.
Dr. and Mrs. Lynn remained in Markethill for some years, and in 1852 the doctor was confirmed as the Medical Officer of Markethill Dispensary District.[4][8]
When Griffith's Valuation was completed for the county of Armagh in 1865, Dr. Lynn's residence was in Russell-street, Armagh, which is in the town of Armagh and which premises he rented from Mr. William Gillis.[9]
Dr. Lynn was also a lay preacher for Armagh Methodist Church and was involved in the temperance movement. When the Armagh Railway Disaster occurred in 1889, he attended to the injured. Later, the church named Lynn Hall in his honour.[4]
Joseph Marshall Lynn, M.D., died in Armagh on the 10th October 1899, having attained the venerable age of 94 years.[10][11]
His body was buried in St. Salvator churchyard in Glaslough, county Monaghan in the same plot as his late wife, Ann Jane, and his parents.[1]
Dr. Lynn's will was proved on the 24th November 1899. There being no surviving children of his marriage to Anne, his legatees included many nieces and nephews, as well as charitable objects and legacies to servants.[11]
