Biography

James Lyon or Lyons was probably born about 1752 or 1753 and at sometime between 1770-1784 he married Grace, surname unknown. According to Grace's burial record, (see below) James worked as a weaver.

They were living in West Boldon in County Durham from at least July 1784 but the fact that two of their daughters, Mary, and Elizabeth, were buried in Boldon but seemingly not baptised there may be an indication they originated elsewhere.

There were at least 8 children, 7 daughters and 1 son but it is possible there were other children.

  1. Mary Lyon, buried 20 September 1794 at Boldon, County Durham;[1]
  2. Elizabeth Lyon, buried 26 September 1793 at Boldon;[2]
  3. Jane Lyon, baptised 16 July 1784 at St Nicholas Church of England, Boldon;[3] the same day as her sister Ann [4](see below);
  4. Ann Lyon, baptised 16 July 1784 at St Nicholas Church of England, Boldon,[5] the same day as her sister Jane;
  5. Eleanor Lyon, baptised 14 June 1789 at St Nicholas Church of England, Boldon,[6], the same day as her sister Isabella[7];
  6. Isabella Lyon, baptised 14 June 1789 at St Nicholas Church of England, Boldon,[8] the same day as her sister Eleanor;
  7. Grace Lyon, baptised 6 January 1792 at St Nicholas Church of England, Boldon,[9] but died young and was buried 1 October 1793 at Boldon, Durham;[10]
  8. James Lyons, baptised 1 Janaury 1797 at St Nicholas Church of England, Boldon;[11]

Two of their daughters, Elizabeth and Grace, must have died less than a week apart in late September 1793 and this may be an indication that they and perhaps other members of the family were the victims of an epidemic or other illness.

His wife Grace died 19 October 1810, aged 56, and was buried 25 October 1810 at Boldon.[12]

There is a record for the burial of James Lyons, age 60 at Monkwearmouth on 3 February 1813,[13] and this may be the same person, as we do know that his daughter Jane was living in that area during the same time period.

Apart from Jane, at this point (9 June 2012) I have found no records for any of the other children.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with James by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with James:
