Biography

Robina, i.e. Robert Jean Lyon was born after the death of her father, Captain Robert Lyon in Dublin Harbour in March 1821. In the baptismal record Robina was christened, using the names, Robert Jean in memory of her deceased father. ^[1]

Robina Lyon shared a surname with her husband John Lyon but they were not related.

Robina and John married in 1846, the banns were called in both Robina's parish of Newton on Ayr on 31st October 1846 and in John's parish of Ayr on 7th November 1846. ^[2]

In the 1851 Census, Robina aged 28, a Sewer was recorded living in Main Street, Newton on Ayr with her husband, John aged 35, their son, John aged 2 and Robina's mother, Janet Lyon, a Widow aged 50, ^[3]

Robina and John appear to have separated between 1854 and 1861 as John Lyon was no longer residing with Robina Lyon in the Census of 1861. In the 1861 Census we find Robina Jane Lyon, aged 39, a Sempstress, living in the Main Sytreet, Newton on Ayr, with her mother Janet, aged 67, and her three children, John aged 12, Jane aged 10 and Robert Stairs aged 7, ^[4]

In 1871, Robina a Shirt Maker aged 48 was living at 46 Main Street, Newton on Ayr, with her children, John aged 22, Jane aged 16 (20!) and Robert aged 17, ^[5]

In 1881, Mrs Robert Lyon, a Housekeeper, aged 59 was resident at 89 Main Street, Newton on Ayr with her son, Robert aged 24 (27!), ^[6]

In 1891, Robina aged 69 was still resident at 89 Main Street, Newton on Ayr with her son, Robert aged 34 (37!), ^[7]

Robina passed away in Newton on Ayr on 4th January 1895, age 73. ^[8]
