Biography

Louisa (Lyons) Powers was born in Appalachia, in Kentucky.

Louisa Lyons was born on 9 March 1846 at Bath County, Kentucky, United States. She was the daughter of John Clark Lyons and Sarah Ann (Boyd) Lyons.

In the 1850 census Louisa (age 5) was in the home of her parents at Bath County, Kentucky, United States.^[1]

In the 1860 census Louisa (age 15) was in the home of her parents at Bath County, Kentucky, United States.^[2]

Louisa married Samuel Powers about 1866-1867. A marriage record has not been located in Morgan, Montgomery or Bath counties. It is suspected that they married right after the end of the Civil War. This matches reasonably with the birth of their first child in September 1868. Samuel and Louisa had four known children. They were:

1. Louisana M Powers (1968 - 1913)
2. Rainey Powers (abt 1869 - bef. 1880)
3. Marcus Powers (1870 - 1942)
4. Francis Marion Powers (1873 - 1952)

In the 1870 census Louisa (age 23) was the wife of Samuel Power (age 26) at Frenchburg, Menifee County, Kentucky, United States.^[3]

Samuel died prior to the 1880 census as Louisa is seen in this cenus as a widow.^[4]

Son Rainey is not shown and it is suspected that he died between 1870 and 1880. Samuel's death is listed as 4 August 1874 in a FamilySearch profile.^[5] References were not provided so it is uncertain if this was the actual death date. The place of death is listed as Menifee County, Kentucky, which is likely accurate as the family resided in Menifee County per census records. Samuel's burial location is unknown.

Louisa (Lyons) Powers (age 46) married James Newton Frisby (age 44) on 2 January 1892 at Menifee County, Kentucky.^[6] James' first wife, Mildred (Ingram) Frisby had died on 11 January 1892.^[7] See also Research Notes below. Louisa was step-mother to several of James' children.

In the 1900 census Louisa (age 55) was the wife of James Frisby (age 52) at Magisterial District 1, Menifee County, Kentucky, United States.^[8]

Note that Mark Powers' wife, Ennis (Hale) Powers had died about 1900 and their daughter Ora M Powers is listed in this census.

James and Louisa relocated to Oklahoma sometime after the 1900 Census. In the 1910 census, Louisa (age 62) was the wife of James N Frisby at Milburn Ward 2, Johnston County, Oklahoma, United States.^[9]

In the 1920 census Louisa (age 74) was the wife of Newton Frisbie at Johnston County, Oklahoma, United States.^[10]

They may have divorced at some point. Louisa is seen residing with son Francis Marion Powers in Middletown, Ohio in the 1930 census^[11]

James Frisby was listed as married and residing alone in Oklahoma in the 1930 Census.^[12]

Louisa died in on 26 Feb 1934 and is buried in the Egelston Cemetery, Menifee County, Kentucky. Her grave marker shows her last name as Powers, indicating that she was perhaps divorced from James Frisby. ^[13] It is suspected that Samuel may also be buried here, but a grave record has not been located. James Frisby died on 25 June 1935 and was buried at Condon Grove Cemetery, Milburn, Johnston County, Oklahoma, United States.^[14]

Research Notes

1. The death date for James N Frisby's wife Mildred is questionable as James and Louisa married prior to the listed death date. It is also possible that James and Mildred were divorced prior to her death.
