Leonora (MacAlister) England was born in Liverpool, Lancashire, England.

Leonora Downes MacAlister was born on the 26th February 1847, in Liverpool, Lancashire, England, the daughter of Scotland-born Robert Macalister and Shropshire-born Ann Downes.[1]

On the 30th March 1851, the 4-year-old Leonora was living on Edge Lane West Derby, Lancashire, with her family. Those home at the time were her father: Robert (49), a Merchant In Foreign Trade; her mother: Anne (35); her siblings: 15-year-old Isabella Anne, a Scholar At Home; 13-year-old Louisa Jane, also a Scholar At Home; 11-year-old Robert, also a Scholar At Home; 7-year-old Anita Wilk, also a Scholar At Home; a visitor: 23-year-old Hinstock, Shropshire-born Mary Griffiths, a farmer's daughter; and the household staff: 24-yeqar-old Andlem, Cheshire-born Martha Jones; 25-year-old Andlem, Cheshire-born Helen Cork; and 21-year-old Andlem, Cheshire-born Mary Cork.[2]

On the 7th April 1861, Lenora (14), with her family, was still living on Edge Lane West Derby. Also home at the time were her father: Robert (59), a Fund Holder; and her siblings: Louisa (23); Robert (21); and Anita (17); her maternal grandmother: Margaret née Robinson (66); Isle Of Man-born Isabella Quilliam (33), Cook; Nottinghamshire-born Susannah Johnson (27); and Ashbourne, Devon-born Mary Jane Noall (24).[3] Where her mother was at the time is not known, but in 1871 she was back with the family in Wavertree, Lancashire.

She married Charles England, merchant (a cousin of Clifford Allbutt), on the 2nd June 1869, according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Established Church, in the Church of St John the Divine, in the Parish of West Derby, Lancashire. The Rev William Calder officiated, and their witnesses were Charles's sister, Susan, and Rob MacAlister.[4]

On the 2nd April 1871, the 24-year-old Leonora was living in Burley, Yorkshire West Riding, with her family. Also at home were her husband: Charles (29), a merchant; their daughter: 1-year-old Evalyn Hilda; and the household staff: Kirkley, Yorkshire-born Elizabeth A Ellis (22), housemaid; and 17-year-old Weston, Yorkshire-born Christiana Jeffrey, Nurse.[5]

On the 3rd April 1881, Leonora (34) was living at Barkstone-Ash, Yorkshire West Riding, with her family. Others home at the time were her husband: Charles (39), a Corn Merchant; their children: 11-year-old Evalyn Hilda; 2-year-old Hester Geraldine; and the household staff: Manchester, Lancashire-born Mary Aldread (22), Cook; Belper, Derbyshire-born Annie Watts (30), Serving Maid; Baslow, Derbyshire-born Susan Thompson (21), Housemaid.[6]

On the 31st March 1901, Leonora (49 - five years younger than her actual age) was living at Spring Hill, Welton, Yorkshire East Riding. Those home at the time were her husband: Charles (59), a grain merchant; their daughter: Hester Geraldine (21); her sister-in-law: Susan (55); Susan's husband: Thomas (64), a Doctor of Medicine; and the household staff: Stamford Bridge, Yorkshire-born Emily Groves (28), a waiting maid; Thornton Le Clay, Yorkshire-born Alice Spaven (19), housemaid; and Stillingfleet, Yorkshire-born Margaret E Todd (29), Cook.[7]

On the 2nd April 1911, Leonora (64) was living on private means at Welton, Welton Manor Brough E Yorkshire. Home with her at the time were her daughter: Hester (28); and the household staff: Burton On Trent, Staffordshire-born Edith E Boddy (30), Cook; Sigglesthorpe, Yorkshire-born Laura E Kelsey (28), Housemaid; Hull, Yorkshire-born Lilian Witty (19), Parlourmaid.[8]

Leonora Downes England née MacAlister passed away on the 31st January 1924, in Eastbourne, Sussex, England, aged 75 years.[9]
