Biography

European Aristocracy
Julia MacCarthy was a member of the aristocracy in British Isles.

Julia's birth year is estimated. She was having children with her 3rd husband Edmund, Lord Dunboyne (b.1520), in the 1550s and possibly until his death in 1567.

Origins

Most sources say that she was the daughter of Cormac Oge MacCarty (1447-1537), 9th Lord of Muskerry.[1]

Marriages

Some sources say that Julia married 3 times;[1][2][3] but at least one source shows her as having also married a 4th time.[4]

1st Marriage: July 1550 - Gerald Fitzmaurice, 13th Baron of Kerry and Lixnaw (disputed)[1]

2nd Marriage: after 1550 - Cormac McCarthy-Reagh[1]

Cormac lived a fairly long life (for the time) and may have had another wife or wives. Julia herself had 3 or 4 husbands over a period of several decades. The dates/sequence of Julia's marriages are not always clear, but Cormac and Julia appear to have had one child:
  1. Donal MacCarthy Reagh (abt.1550-1612), who became for a time 17th Prince of Carbery[5]

3rd Marriage: before 27 Jul 1551 - Edmund Butler, 1st/11th Baron Dunboyne[2][4] Styled as Baroness Dunboyne.

Children by 3rd marriage with Edmund Butler, Baron Dunboyne:

  1. Hon Eleanor (Butler) FitzGerald (abt.1545-1636)
  2. James Butler (abt.1551-1624) 2nd/12th Baron Dunboyne
  3. John Butler (abt.1560-) of Widdingstown

4th Marriage: 1568 - Richard Bourke, 2nd Earl of Clanricarde (d. after 1580). Styled as Countess of Clanricarde.[6]

Research Notes

Discrepancy regarding Julia's mother. Given the wide range of birth years between Julia (b.1515) and her elder brother Teige b.1472),[7] it is almost certain that they were born of different mothers. Burke cites Cormac Oge's marriage to Joan FitzGerald[8] (born 1490s; daughter of Maurice, 9th Earl of Desmond) who would be a more logical candidate as Julia's mother.

Her second and third husbands both died in 1567 making it very unlikely that she was married to both, though the marriage order appears to be reversed, given that she had a daughter in 1535 by Cormac McCarthy-Reagh. Cracroft calls the wife of Edmond Butler "Cecilia" as does the Dictionary of Irish Biography who says that she went on to marry Richard Burke, he divorced her.
