Note: There were many lineages among the MacCarthys of Munster. The 3 most famous were the MacCarthy Mór (senior branch); the Lords of Muskerry, and the MacCarthy Reagh (Princes of Carbery).
Note: There are several numbering systems for the Lords of Muskerry. The Wikipedia version (see image) is also used on Wikitree in order to facilitate research between the 2 websites.
According to John O'Hart (Irish Pedigrees), Dermod was the 2nd son of Cormac MacCarthy Mór and Honoria, who was the daughter of Maurice FitzMaurice,[1] 6th Lord of Kerry, and Elizabeth Condon.
Dermod's elder brother Donal became the MacCarthy Mór.
In 1353, Dermod became the first Lord of Muscry.
According to his elder brother Donal's profile in the Dictionary of Irish Biography,[2] Diarmait "Lord of Múscraige (Muskerry) ... was treacherously slain by the O'Mahonys in 1381 [other sources say 1368]. In turn, Diarmait was succeeded as lord of Múscraige by his son Cormac, who died in fetters while a prisoner of his first cousin Tadhg na Mainistreach."
