Note: There were many lineages among the MacCarthys of Munster. The 3 most famous were the MacCarthy Mór (senior branch); the Lords of Muskerry, and the MacCarthy Reagh (Princes of Carbery).

• The common ancestor of all 3 branches was Donal Mór Na Curra MacCarthy (1138-1206), King of Desmond
• The Princes of Carbery descended from his son Donal Og Cairprech MacCarthy (d.1251)
• Descended via a different son was Cormac MacCarthy Mór (ca.1271-1359) "Prince of Desmond", who was the father of brothers:
  • Donal MacCarthy Mór (1303-ca.1371) "Prince of Desmond", ancestor of the MacCarthy Mórs
  • Dermot MacCarthy (1310-1368), "1st Lord of Muskerry", ancestor of the Lords of Muskerry

Biography

According to John O'Hart (Irish Pedigrees), Dermod was the 2nd son of Cormac MacCarthy Mór and Honoria, who was the daughter of Maurice FitzMaurice,^[1] 6th Lord of Kerry, and Elizabeth Condon.

Dermod's elder brother Donal became the MacCarthy Mór.

In 1353, Dermod became the first Lord of Muscry.

According to his elder brother Donal's profile in the Dictionary of Irish Biography,^[2] Diarmait "Lord of Múscraige (Muskerry) ... was treacherously slain by the O'Mahonys in 1381 [other sources say 1368]. In turn, Diarmait was succeeded as lord of Múscraige by his son Cormac, who died in fetters while a prisoner of his first cousin Tadhg na Mainistreach."
