Biography

He was the son of James MacDonald and Agnes Campbell of Argyll. Ranald was held hostage by Sir Lachlan Mor MacLean to maintain the good behaviour of his family.

Ranald was given a grant of Smerby Castle and its lands. The castle is a small tower house located on a summit. For more info see CANMORE.

Ranald married a daughter of Bannatyne of Kames.

He passed away in 1616 and is buried at Saddell Abbey.
