Hugh was brought up under the Protestant in influence of his mothers people, which was anti-Jacobite, and favourable to the Orange movement.
He was rank of Captain in the regiment of General Mackay, his relative, and he received the freedom of Montrose in 1692. Hugh spent a good part of his military career in Flanders, where he fought in the army of the States General in the war with France. He died before 1721.
