It is believed that Angus and at least two of his sons, Alexander and Peter, came with these highlanders aboard the Pearl and settled on Sir William’s land. Sir John (William’s son and heir) Johnsons ’ ‘Rent Roll’ for this patent lists 62 highlanders that started to pay rent in 1780 – it was common practice that new tenants were exempt from paying rent for a number of years after they took up new land. Of the 62 highlanders: 26 were Mcdonells, 2 Camerons, 5 Grants and 1 Chisholm. The first three Mcdonells on the list were a John, Allen and Alexander (the only ones to be granted 200 acres). There is also one Angus McDonell in this group. When the War of Independence broke out Sir John Johnson remained loyal to the crown and actively encouraged his tenants to do likewise – particularly the highlanders. In the early stages of the war Sir John and his loyalist tenants came under close observation from “the Committee of Palatine District” who caused Sir John’s militia to be disarmed and took six McDonells and their servants prisoner and sending them to Reading Pennsylvania and then to Lancaster. As tensions increased between the loyalists and patriots Sir John, 130 highlanders, 120 others and three indian guides left Johnstown and went to Montreal. This body of men formed the nucleus of the xxx, xxx, and xxx regiments. It is not known if Angus or his sons took part in the fighting or which militia unit they may have been part of. Angus’ age at this time is not known but he was probably getting up in years and would have probably remained behind on his land with the other families.
