Aeneas was born in 1816 in Bengal.[1] He was the son of Lt-Col Duncan MacPherson and Anne Brodie Campbell. Eneas, son of D. MacPherson & Anne Brodie Campbell, was born on 21 December 1816 and baptised on 6 January 1817 in Bengal, India.[2][3] Alternatively, Aeneas, son of Duncan MacPherson & Anne Brodie Campbell, was born on 21 December 1816 and baptised on 6 January 1817 in Ardersier, Inverness-shire, Scotland.[4] He certainly would have grown up in Ardersier, where his younger siblings were born.
He does not appear to have had a military career - his obituaries refer to him as Esquire rather than by any rank.[5] His life between his baptism and his marriage, relatively late in life, is not well documented. At some point (between the 1841 and 1851 censuses) his parents moved their primary home from Ardersier to Cheltenham, which is where he married. Eneas does not show up at home on either census and may have been engaged in business overseas (perhaps Mauritius, where his wife to be and her first husband had business interests?).
Eneas's marriage to Mary Jane (Burnett) Chapman, daughter of John Burnett (former Colonial Secretary of Van Diemen's Land) and widow of former sea captain and later businessman Edward Chapman, was registered in the Jul-Aug-Sep quarter of 1855 in the Cheltenham district.[6] The marriage was mentioned (and dated 14 July) in an 1864 Privy Council appeal court report regarding issues arising from Captain Chapman's probate.
Eneas's death (age 50) was registered in the Jul-Aug-Sep quarter of 1867 in the St. James Westminster district.[7]
Eneas died on 8 August 1867 and was buried in West Brompton, Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, Greater London, England.
Eneas was in an obituary on 10 August 1867 in York, Yorkshire, England. He died (age 51) in 1867.[8]
His widow may have passed away in 1883, at least he shares a grave site with a "Mary Anne MacPherson" who died that year.

↑ There are records naming both parents for the same date placing his birth and baptism in Ardersier, Scotland and in Bengal. I can think of good reasons and find plenty of precedents why an overseas birth might be recorded in the parent's home country. It is harder to explain why a Scotland birth and baptism to Scots parents might be recorded in India. For this reason I lean to Aeneas being born in India. His father was known to be a military man and could have served for a short period in India. Note in the 1851 census Duncan has Indian-born grandchildren so there was some family connection there.

There was another Aeneas MacIntosh MacPherson who lived around the same period (1791-1875) as the child of Duncan and Anne. This one was born in Clune, the son of Andrew and Anne, he married Anne Helen Clark and lived in Scotland before emigrating to Timaru, New Zealand, where he died in 1875.
