Catherine 'Kate' Macarthur was born on 14th June 1818 at Parramatta, Colony of New South Wales. She was the third daughter of Hannibal Hawkins Macarthur, nephew of entrepreneur, John Macarthur, and Anna Maria King, daughter of former governor of New South Wales, Philip Gidley King.[1]
Kate married Scottish emigrant and budding pastoralist, Patrick Leslie, on 9th September 1840 in St John's Church of England (Anglican Church), Parramatta in the Colony of New South Wales.[2] In 1841, the couple travelled from Sydney to Brisbane aboard the Hunter River Steam Navigation Company steamer, Shamrock, before becoming the first family to make the journey from Brisbane to the Darling Downs, where Patrick was in the process of establishing Canning Downs. In 1844, Patrick purchased 14 hectares on the Brisbane River and built Newstead House. With his brothers managing Canning Downs, he moved his wife and children to the 'city'.
They later visited England, before returning to Sydney where Patrick entered parliament. Later still, they moved to New Zealand and established properties there.
