Peter was still an infant when the 1881 Census was taken, his family lived on Academy Street in Tain. [2] He was 10 years old in 1891, when the family had moved to Ross Street in Tain. [3]
In 1901 Peter was 20 years old and a boarder in Cambusnethan, Lanark, Scotland. He was a coach painter. [4]
Peter emigrated to the United States and arrived 12 April 1909 in New York. He's described as being 5'9" tall with dark hair, grey eyes and a fresh complexion. He gives his occupation as coach painter. He had $12 dollars. He gave his brother-in-law's name, A.W. Peattie as a relative in the 'old country', his sister Mary's husband; and his sister Ann Cornell as his relative in New York.[5]
Peter boarded with a family in Brooklyn and worked as a carriage painter in 1910. [6] On 3 June 1911 he married Margaret Ann Dennis. Margaret, age 32, was born in Aberdeen, Scotland. Her father was William, her mother Margaret Milne. They were married in Brooklyn. [7] Peter and Margaret welcomed a daughter in 1912, they named her Margaret. Unfortunately, Peter's wife Margaret passed away shortly after on 27 March 1912 from "peritonitis following labor".
Peter registered for the WWI draft on 12 Sept 1918. He listed his daughter as his nearest relative. Peter worked as a chauffeur-auto mechanic at Park Circle Auto Repair in Brooklyn. [8]
Research Notes
It appears that when Peter's wife died, he placed his daughter with a family so he could work. He gives a different address for himself and his daughter (his nearest relative) on his WWI draft card and his daughter Margaret is at that address on the 1920 U.S. Census. I haven't yet found Peter in 1920 nor in the N.Y. 1925 Census. He passed away in 1927 from tuberculosis and another family member told me the daughter became a nun. I haven't been able to sustantiate that. Peter was most likely Protestant, I don't know about his wife.
