Richard was born in Scarborough, Yorkshire, England, in 1823, to parents Reverend Robert Machell and Eliza Mary (Zealey) Machell, and was christened there on the 8th March 1823. [1]
He was one of 12 siblings, the others being:

Richard graduated with a Master of Arts (M.A.) and he held the offices of Canon of York and Rector at Roos, Yorkshire, England. [2]
The Reverend Richard Machell married Emma Willoughby, daughter of Henry Willoughby and Charlotte Eyre, on the 11th April 1850, in Settrington, Yorkshire, England. [3]

In 1861, Richard (38), and Emma (37), were living on the High Street, Barrow on Humber, with their children, a boarder, and six servants. [4]

Richard, was appointed Rector of Roos, and the family were residing in the village Rectory in 1871. [5]

Richard and his family remained resident in Roos, and the 1881 census lists the family and three servants, at Rectory House, Roos. [6]

Richard and Emma and were residing in The Vicarage, Coney Street, York, at the time of the 1891 census; Richard was then the Vicar of St Martin le Grand. Also in the household at that time were their grandchildren Julian (13) and his brother, Lancelot (14), and three servants. [7]
Richard died on the 18th August 1898. [8] at Crakenthorpe Hall, Appleby, Westmorland, England; the ancestral home of the Machell's of Crackenthorpe. [9]
Richard left a will, and probate was granted on the 7th of October 1898 at London. [9]
" MACHELL the reverend Richard Beverley of the vicarage St. Martin-le-Grand Yorkshire clerk died 18 August at Crackenthorpe Hall Appleby Westmorland Probate London 7 October to Robert Scott Machell captain in Her Majesty's-army and Aubrey Frederick Willoughby solicitor Effects £9488 12s. 7d. "
