Biography

James was born about 1825. He was the son of David Mackey and Margaret Doig. He passed away in 1905.

Australasian Underwater Cultural Heritage Database. The "DART" was a 134 ton Brig ,built on the Huon River by James Bailey,Thomas Cullen and James and David Mackay , in 1850 registered Hobart. Ship Wreck ID: 7032 , shipwrecked 1865 East coast Tasmania.

NOTE: The Surname was found to be spelt either Mackay , Mackie , Mackey. But the brothers were well known Shipwrights in the 1850s building boats on the Huon River and at Battery Point Hobart. The "Dart " was built on the Huon in 1850 and the "Alert" built in 1872 Battery Point. The wreck of the "Dart" ship wrecked in 1865 was built by James Bailey , Thomas Cullen , James and David Mackay in 1850. . The brothers operated their business for more than 23 years in Tasmania from 1850 to mid 1870s. They constructed or participated in the construction of at least 10 similar sized vessels to the "Alert".
