Research Notes

There was another NEHEMIAH MAGEE in Pike County, Mississippi who was documented as married to one Martha Smith in Marion County, died in Roans Prairie, Texas, and recorded as the son of JACOB MAGEE. This is a different NEHEMIAH MAGEE.

Biography

NEHEMIAH MAGEE was born about 1797. Given that his widow was taxed on the 1846 Pike County Tax Rolls on the line above SIER MAGEE, Snr,[1] he is the NEHEMIAH noted as a son along with SIER in the Last Will and Testament of JOHN MAGEE written in 1824.[2] The will stated:

"Thirdly I give and bequeath to my beloved sons Sier, Nehemiah, and Richard jointly my sawmill and ginn, that each of my above named sons shall have an equal division of the profits arising from said sawmill and gin forever...to my son Nehemiah I give and bequeath the North east quarter of section no. 30 of Township no. 2 range no. 11 west & c..."

During the War of 1812, NEHEMIAH MAGEE served in Bond's Company, NIXON's 13th Regiment in the Mississippi Militia.[3] NEHEMIA was described by his wife, OLIVE JANE BRELAND, at the time of his enlistment on the War of 1812 Pension Application as:

5' 10" height, hair light, eyes blue, complexion was fair, occupation farmer[4]

According to the War of 1812 Pension and Bounty Land, Warrant Application file for NEHEMIAH MAGEE, OLIVE JANE was married to NEHEMIAH MAGEE on 10 Jan 1839 by William Fortenberry a minister of the gospel for which there is no known private or public document to prove marriage.[5] The file shows that NEHEMIAH MAGEE died on 24 Oct 1844 at their home. The application file also recorded that they had three children born to them. OLIVE JANE stated in the application that she nor her husband had been previously married.

The 1840 Census for NEHEMIAH MAGEE recorded his age as 40 to 50 years old.[6] The household was enumerated with:

  • one male age 40-50, one female under 5, one female 20-30

The three children were enumerated on the 1850 Census for Pike County Mississippi in the household of 29-year-old OLIVE as:

  • ELVANA MAGEE, age 9, [married name - Dillon, 22 Nov 1839 - 5 Apr 1922]
  • WARREN L. MAGEE, age 8,
  • DAVID R. MAGEE, age 7[7]
